I'm updating Gentoo and it's stopped at media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.24.2-r1. This is the second update I've done, and I haven't had sound working since my first update completed, so I'm hoping to solve two problems at the same time. Here's the output:

Need more lines above the "failed to emerge" line.

I've found a lot of recent emerge problems are due to lafile problems. See if it's trying to deal with a .la file, and emerge lafilefixer to get a tool to work around these problems...

but this is purely speculation, need more information...

And thanks, I'll get lafilefixer and see if that helps.

And no, that wasn't the fix...but I've got lafilefixer, and after the alsa thing gets worked out, I've got a couple hundred more files waiting to bonk out, so it's probably a good thing.

emerge dev-libs/icu

then try your large update

Code:

/usr/bin/gmsgfmt: error while loading shared libraries: libicui18n.so.46: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

libicui18n.so.46 is part of the dev-libs/icu package, so i would imagine pulling it in would fix this.

That fixed it. Ran revdep-rebuild after revdep-rebuild -ip, and it sailed straight through the alsa file.
