PostPosted: Wed Jun 29, 2011 3:13 pm    Post subject: upgraded to xorg 1.10, no mouse, no keyboard [WORKAROUND] Reply with quote

[EDIT]: scroll to end of thread to see workaround. this is not a fix, just skirts some other problem i'm having with udev/evdev :x

i tried to post this in desktop environments, but "new post" or whatever just lead me back to the forum index. ??

my xorg.conf is the minimal 4 lines to use nvidia proprietary drivers.

the 1.10 upgrade guide here: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/xorg-server-1.10-upgrade-guide.xml
says: Xorg no longer does autodetect devices using xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse. If you want your input devices hotplugged, please migrate your settings to the xf86-input-evdev driver.

i've been using gentoo for 10 years, and linux for 15. i recognize much of that as english, but the paragraph as a whole is a complete mystery to me.
i have no need for my keyboard and mouse to be hotplug-able (coldplugable?), but they are USB, so it follows they can/should be.

but i hvae NO idea how to "migrate [my] settings to the xf86-input-evdev driver", particularly because the X Server configuration howto from gentoo says that you no longer need an xorg.conf file and it should "just work".

in make.conf i have:
Code:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse"

i built xorg-server with udev use flag (and nptl, xorg)

here is my xorg log:

Code:

thanks for the replies, all. i've rebuild the drivers several times. still no keyboard nor mouse

i just noticed that new X Server configuration howto says to only use INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" (and synaptics in their setup). should i remove mouse and keyboard from there and remove those drivers?

[edit]: removed the mouse and keyboard driver packages, left only evdev in INPUT_DEVICES. rebuilt xorg-drivers and xf86-input-evdev to no avail.
i even tried adding a 30-keyboard.conf to xorg.conf.d, just to enable ctrl-alt-bksp server killswitch, but that hasn't changed anything...
note: keyboard and mouse work fine in the terminal

yes that is the whole X log.
yes, udev is running.
i should also state i updated this during an emerge world, AND i upgraded kernels from 2.6.30 to 2.6.38. evdev is built into the kernel. nvidia module is loaded.

what are the input nodes you are referring to? you mean /dev/input/*? what are the associated environment vars?

I don't know what to say more. I had the same problem. I solved it in that order: recompiled (upgraded) kernel, rebooted, upgraded udev and made sure it's running (at first it was somehow misconfigured and init.d script returned OK, but in the log it was shown it's dead just after that), re-emerged all 3 drivers (mouse, keyboard and evdev). At the end I ran revdep-rebuild. And that was all for me. No more ideas, sorry.

Edit:
Wait, what? Your xorg.conf does not contain keyboard info?!

Here is mine, except comments:

thanks for all your info. unfortunately it's not helping my situation.

apparently mice and keyboards are now handled by evdev, and a custom xorg.conf is not required except to give certain options. in these cases you use the files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
none of these files existed for me.

it thus uses the xorg.conf from /usr/share/blah/blah
and tries to figure everything out. this works if you are using nvidia hw and the OSS (neuvau sp?) drivers. but they don't work (well) for my card.

anyway, i tried using the mouse driver as well as the evdev driver for my mouse in a version of your config file, but that didn't work either.

this is driving me nuts. i can control my desktop for now through VNC from my other machine. but that's quite limiting. not to mention the x11vnc server seems to crash X (or did before i did this emerge world)

@molot: I'm nearly certain, that both of those sections aren't used.

@Oo.et.oO: I'm asking for 'udevadm info' on those nodes.

hmmm:
Code:

udevadm info -a -p /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.1/usb7/7-2/7-2:1.0/input/input2

Same thing happened to me. I down graded xorg-server to 1.9.5 and the problem went away. There are other reports of the same issue here. So this appears to be a fairly common issue with xorg-server-1.10.2. A bug has been opened here:

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=364121

It appears that this user only had an issue with the mouse.

@Oo.et.oO:
- not '-a'
- use name of /dev node, not sysfs one
- use '-q all'

I don't try to pretend I know what was wrong, or what step actually fixed it. I only know that I had just the same symptoms, and now I'm on that very machine. My Gentoo setup is many years old. It survived one rebuild without format, two motherboards, 3 hard disks, 2 graphic cards (plus those built into motherboards - goddes I'm glad I stayed with nvidia all the time), removing all graphic stuff to make it a home server when I bought a laptop, and making it a workstation again year later when I broke laptop. It's pretty sure I have many unused configs. But it works for me now. So if anything from machine that recovered from this problem can help you, just tell me and I'll share. That's all I can do.

syntax for udevadm is FUNKY. still not really sure what i was asking this thing. why is that a name and not a path??. i digress

It is strange that the X server does not even attempt to load the evdev driver. Is /sys mounted? /dev/input contains your keyboard and mouse? /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf exists?

i had nothing in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ i had to create the dir when i added a file for a keyboard option i want (ctrl-alt-bksp).
i couldn't find anything that would restore that directory (i never had it in older versions of xorg of course).
i think it might be a relic of older configuration setups.

the log file says it's using:
Code:
#> cat /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf
#
# Catch-all evdev loader for udev-based systems
# We don't simply match on any device since that also adds accelerometers
# and other devices that we don't really want to use. The list below
# matches everything but joysticks.

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev pointer catchall"
        MatchIsPointer "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev keyboard catchall"
        MatchIsKeyboard "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev touchpad catchall"
        MatchIsTouchpad "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev tablet catchall"
        MatchIsTablet "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev touchscreen catchall"
        MatchIsTouchscreen "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
EndSection

yes sys is mounted:

Code:
ls /sys/bus/usb/devices/
1-0:1.0/   2-2:1.1/   2-3.2:1.1/ 5-0:1.0/   7-0:1.0/   usb3/

Why should it ?
That output from 'udevadm info' (only event* node matter, btw) tells that for whatever the reason neither mouse nor keyboard are getting tagged as such (there should be i.e. 'E: ID_INPUT_MOUSE=1' for mouse).
Something wrong with your udev ? Perhaps the kernel's too old ?

i'm using "udev-164-r2 +extras"
how would i know if/how there is something wrong with udev? networking works, for instance. sound works.
maybe i missed an option or two when configuring the new kernel? i'll check based upon whatever the docs say...

i don't seem to be missing any options i need (i copied over my .config from 2.6.30)

FYI. i had to downgrade kernels to 2.6.37 because openafs <=1.4.14 won't run/build on 2.6.38.

i rebuilt all the xserver and drivers, and i still get no mouse/keyboard. udev still reports them the same way.

here is my kernel .config just for kicks:

switched back to 1.9.4. still no mouse nor keyboard.

this has to be an evdev or udev problem, no?

i re-merged udev making sure my rules were updated:
Code:
#> ls -l /lib64/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-input.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2005 Jun 30 10:44 60-persistent-input.rules

but udev is just NOT setting
Code:
E: ID_INPUT=1
E: ID_INPUT_MOUSE=1

in addition i don't get links for the keyboard and mouse in /dev/input/by-id/

 :x :?: :!: :x

it's not doing that for the keyboard either. this must be the problem. i'll go post on this in the other forum.

the 1.10 upgrade guide here: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/xorg-server-1.10-upgrade-guide.xml
says: Xorg no longer does autodetect devices using xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse.

[/code]

Same trouble here. This morning I upgraded to the new stable xorg-server only to discover my mouse and keyboard were useless. I had to mask the new package and downgrade to 1.95. I have to have my system working today and I don't have time to waste trying to solve the problem. Maybe tomorrow?

found a workaround!

i found this bug here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/318181
they say this isn't a fix really, just skirts another problem some of us are having with udev/evdev

so my entire xorg.conf looks like thus:
Code:
Section "Device"
  Identifier    "Nvidia Card"
  Driver        "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
        Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
        Option  "AutoEnableDevices" "true"
EndSection

this works in xorg-server-1.9.4
i also have xf86-input-mouse, xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-evdev installed.
i'm not sure if those are helping or what...
i get these two sections now in my X log:
Code:
[ 89274.610] (==) |-->Input Device "<default pointer>"
[ 89274.610] (==) |-->Input Device "<default keyboard>"

I had also this problem after upgrading to xorg 1.10. No mouse and no keyboard.
I have re-emerged xf86-video-intel, xf86-input-evdev, xf86-video-fbdev, xorg-server and then rebooted my computer.
Mouse and keyboard are working now.
