I've just come by this article : http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-boot.html
First of all why ? Well the first complain I get from fresh new installation of linux that I do for friends (mostly MDK and RH) is that it takes a long time to boot when they compare their precious windows XP. After that well I hack a little the rc.sysinit to cut some things that aren't necessary for users. Futher cut services etc but the idea behind the article is pretty good since it could cut boot time without getting our hands dirty. I know for a server standpoint it would be hell since it would be harder to know which service didn't start. Of course there is the /var/log/dmesg but hey it's better to know it at boot time.
Since portage is pretty well organised and the initlevels too. I thought it would be easier to categorize and to know dependencies of the services at boot time. The method he used in the article involed the make command so maybe it would be a good idea to implement this in Gentoo.
So what's your point of view on this ? I'm not a developper nor a guru but maybe their are better ways of starting services in a serial method when some have little or no dependencies  |

also edit /etc/init.d/rc and you will see we already do parallel service startup. |
