Extra problems but resolved:
I had few problems with the compilation of open-vm-tools-kmod. In files:
/var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/open-vm-tools-kmod-0.0.20110328.387002/work/open-vm-tools-2011.03.28-387002/modules/linux/vmci/linux/driver.c
line 39: //#include <linux/smp_lock.h> comment out, can not be found
/var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/open-vm-tools-kmod-0.0.20110328.387002/work/open-vm-tools-2011.03.28-387002/modules/linux/vsock/linux/af_vsock.c
line 105: //#include <linux/smp_lock.h> comment out, can not be found

then can be compiled, install and qmerge.

With mesa I followed the Gentoo's Bugzilla – Bug 354607, to obtain the vmwgfx_drv module.

I think that I have all modules instaled and loaded, it shoud work, but it doesnt.

It seems that I have forgotten something to do. Can you help me with this?

Many thanks + best,
Sandro

I reemerged it and reconfigured system a bit more. To me it seems that I might have PCI collisions or something similar. I attach complete dmesg output plus the rest of useful info.

I have to edit post. Info is too lengthy. I will post complete files on web.

And here are links to complete dmesg an "lspci -v" outputs.

http://www2.arnes.si/~agrm/files/dmesg.txt
http://www2.arnes.si/~agrm/files/lspci.txt

I cant see any device in /dev associated with vmware, only in /dev/dri/card0, but maybe this is irrelevant.

Thanks for help.

Best, Sandro.

I would recommend to use this xorg.conf as starting point:
Code:

Section "Files"
   ModulePath   "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/misc/"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/OTF"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/Type1/"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/"
EndSection

Section "Module"
   Load  "glx"
   Load  "extmod"
   Load  "record"
   Load  "dri2"
   Load  "dbe"
   Load  "dri"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier   "Monitor0"
   VendorName   "VMware"
   ModelName    "VMWare virtual monitor"
   HorizSync    1.0 - 10000.0
   VertRefresh  1.0 - 10000.0
   ModeLine "1280x1024" 100 1280 1300 1400 1500 1024 1100 1200 1300
EndSection

Section "Device"
        ### Available Driver options are:-
        ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False",
        ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz"
        ### [arg]: arg optional
        #Option     "HWcursor"              # [<bool>]
        #Option     "Xinerama"              # [<bool>]
        #Option     "StaticXinerama"        # <str>
   Identifier  "Card0"
   Driver      "vmware"
   VendorName  "VMware Inc"
   BoardName   "Abstract SVGA II Adapter"
   BusID       "PCI:0:15:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device     "Card0"
   Monitor    "Monitor0"
   SubSection "Display"
      Viewport   0 0
      Depth     24
      Modes  "1280x1024"
   EndSubSection
EndSection

For the calcuation of the modelines you can take a look at the site http://www.topasnet.ch (page "Setup").
Hope this helps!

Thanks Caludio. I simply copy/paste your xorg.conf and run again in the same problem. Now I have a good reference and will play around.

Best, Sandro.

Do you mean this with "the same problem"?

As far as I know, the X server searches for all available modules in this directory:
Code:

entoolight ~ # ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root   39056 Apr 15  2010 vmwlegacy_drv.so

Please check if the vmware drivers are there!

Once, there was an issue about the package x11-drivers/xf86-video-vmware which was not working at all! But now, it seems to work well - I'm actually using 11.0.1.

jup, the same error:

Xorg.0.log
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/438103/

But I'm really suspicious abut the line in Xorg.0.log

Code:

[ 36755.691] drmGetBusid returned ''

it looks like that it is not detecting anything at relevant, it is just empty. But looking to similar outputs it should be like

Code:

Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

I'm using x11-drivers/xf86-video-vmware-11.0.3, with

xorg.conf
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/438108/

It is a strange behavior. All drivers are in and up, but seems like it does not wont to raise it at the time of firing startx.

My VM uses the vmwlegacy driver - who knows why...
Please rename your "vmwgfx" to something else and do a test again!
Good luck!

I did rename it and the problem remains. Who knows what is going on, I'm not smart enough to resolve it. In a meanwhile I used your GentooLight.vmdk and works perfect. Probably I will just tailor that one to my needs.

Claudio thanks again for you effort.

Best, Sandro.

PS: I saw that you use x86 and ATA instead, I use amd64 and SCSI maybe that's the reason.

Hi Sandro, you don't get rid of me!
Let me ask you a question: where do you get your vmwgfx from? Is it form the orginial VMware tools?
Can you please enter the following thing:
Code:
equery b /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vmwgfx_drv.so

What if you move this driver to an other directory so that Xorg doesn't find anything for sure?

Don't worry. I like to debug things, especially in gentoo.

the equery:
Code:

sandro-LinBox drivers # equery b /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vmwgfx_drv.so
 * Searching for /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vmwgfx_drv.so ...
media-libs/mesa-7.10.3-r1 (/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/vmwgfx_drv.so)

All thing are from gentoo repository, no external stuff. I had few things to resolve, being able to compile all modules:
- in newest kernel vmwgfx is not included in dri, so added manually in kernel-config
- the open-vm-tools couldn't compile due to error (in upper posts is descibed)
- the rest compiled normally

vmwgfx_crv.so moved, got Xorg.0.log:
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/439218/

I really have no idea, what can be the reason.

Best, Sandro.
