Gnome desktops and iconified applications/windows

Hi

I've noticed there are quite some Gnome desktops which don't have a window list in a panel nor a panel menu. But that means that if you iconify a window, you won't be able to bring it back anymore. Am I missing something here?

For my desktop I'd like to have a little panel with just the little thingy at the right side of the menu panel. (the thing which shows your applications in a dropdown list) But it seems that the only way to have that is the menu panel. And that has to be on the top and goes from left to right. Am I missing something here, too?
