I did "emerge -k gnome" but i get the following error halfway through the installation procedure:

Alex,
I had this same exact problem - (I saw your messages)... And no, emerge sync doesn't fix it. If you scroll back a ways you'll see a bunch of error 139 when emerge tries to call scrollkeeper-preinstall. This call is the call that is supposed to generate the *.omf.out file that is being looked for later on. You can confirm this by looking back through the output and you will see the error 139's. Anyway, I did find a solution - at least one that worked for me. What I did was emerge -C scrollkeeper to remove it from my system. I then recompiled libxslt and libxml2. Once those were done, I then emerge scrollkeeper. That seemed to do the trick. I was then succesfully able to isntall Gnome.
I did just recompiling the libs and scrollkeeper - but that didn't seem to work. The only way it worked for me was to actually remove scrollkeeper and then recompile the libs and then scroollkeeper - not sure why
Anyway, good luck....

There have been several discussions/reports about this issue, and it seems that it only affect athlonXP. Can you confirm this? |

i do have an athlon xp btw.... but then it should only be the compiler settings that cause the problem... could that be true?
i have:
CFLAGS="-O3 -march=athlon-xp -funroll-loops -fprefetch-loop-arrays -pipe"
and the same for CXXFLAGS.

thank you for your reply, i will give it a try
btw, what do libxslt and libxml2 have to do with scrollkeeper and why did you believe uninstalling and recompiling could do the trick? Just curious at how people come to such solutions

AFAIK, the "why" is not well understood yet... Scrollkeeper relies on the xml/xsl libs, and for some reasons it fails on athlonxp when they have been compiled with optimisation (and maybe some particular versions of the libs and of gcc). Some discussions about this issues:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=75489
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26320
And for "how people come to such solutions", I guess that it's because they have noticed this only happen with athlonxp. Such processor specific issues can only be introduced by gcc in the program or one of the libs it use... |

I've been doing alot of work with gnome and portage lately. I dont think this is a athlon issue. This steams from how portage or I should say emerge/ebuild sandboxs things, emerge and ebuild have wrappers for stuff like make so it can translate /usr into /var/tmp/portagae....... but whenever an odd install tool like scroolkeeper is used sometimes patches are needed.. and the developers add them. or there is some logic put in place to fool the install tool to place stuff in the sandbox instead of tryinng to place it in the real dir path ie /.
more then likely in this case however there was an issue with your scrollkeeper install.
let me know if anyone is still getting this error, since it relates to something I am working on now.
