Spellchecking in Thunderbird

The thunderbird I have installed via portage (the latest one, emerged a couple of days ago) does not have any sort of spell checking option. I have checked the ebuild, and to the best of my knowledge there doesn't seem to be a use flag that pertains to spellchecking that it uses, nor is there any compile-time configuration that I see that is relevent. Yet, the binary I downloaded from www.mozilla.org does have a spellcheck option. What gives? I would rather not use the generic binary package, but having spell check is pretty important to me.
