Ok, I emerged kde. I followed the instruction from the web. After I added the "kdm" to the /etc/rc.conf file, I rebooted (as the instruction told me). When i re-started KDE did not start up. I got this "Xfree86 Project" GUI prompt. I can start kde through kdm but I need the GUI to start automatically. Ideas...

Oh, that's good then. You scared me bit.

I am sorry, but apparently I gave you the wrong directions.

You need to run:
Code:

rc-update add xdm default

Try that.

The last thing I can think of is to modify this part of your rc.conf:

Code:

#
# Defaults depending on what you install currently include:
#
# Gnome - will start gnome-session
# kde-<version> - will start startkde (ex: kde-3.0.2)
# Xsession - will start a terminal and a few other nice apps

#XSESSION="Gnome"

It is pretty self-explanatory; Just put 'kde-version#' instead of Gnome, and uncomment the XSESSION line by removing the '#'.
