Quick warning for anyone installing kde 4.7 who has grouping or grid desktop layouts. You will find that the plasma desktop crashes when starting up, because of a bug in the grouping code. The bug has been identified and will be fixed in 4.7.1 (see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278222). As a workaround, you can start with a fresh config (rename or delete ~/.kde4 while kde4 isn't running (ie from one of the virtual terminals). You should be able to return to the current configuration with 4.7.1.

Have fun!

Or follow the instructions at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278222#c5 to fix without giving up your current config.

I did see that, but when I copied my original configuration back and made the changes I had some additional issues with the panel, hence my recommendation in the original post. Of course others may have more luck than I had! I posted the first message to avoid people experiencing what I experienced with the crash on start up without understanding the problem.

removing the plasma-config files under $HOME/.kde4/share/config helped me to get my desktop back (without gridlayout :-( )

Code:

ls -l .kde4/share/config/ | grep -i plasma

Gridlayout moved to kde-base/kdeplasma-addons.
