I don't use a DE, and because of my problem with xfce Terminal (another thread...), I decided to install gnome-terminal.

I tried setting the background image, and it does not pick up .jpg images -- just png and xpm. Xfce Terminal has the same issue. I've never seen either one of them built in this way.

I've tried adding "jpeg" to package.use for both, this does not make any difference. I thought it might be the gtk+ build, but that does not seem to accept a jpeg flag either.

I'm guessing this is not normal on gentoo, since google does not turn up any previous complaints.

Okay, this is more than just the terminals. Other X apps which use jpg images are reporting they cannot be loaded.

Thanks much. Looks like that's it.

Why would that be the default? I imagine this depends on what required gdk-pixbuf to start with, which was likely fvwm or gvim. Should I report this somewhere?

The next app I noticed it with was gkrellm.

Because the default is a basic headless server. If you want to use Gentoo on a desktop, you should pick a desktop profile. See the Choosing the Right Profile section of the Handbook.
