I've seen a few posts with this problem, but none have helped me. Basically my net connection is appalling bad under linux. I have a small windows partition for the odd game and my net connection is always fine.
I connect via dhcp to a cable modem with a netgear card using the natsemi driver compiled in to the kernel. This is the setup I've been using for over a year and it's only recently started playing up.
I can't see any error messages in dmesg, there's nothing in the logs, except for this which I found curious:
Code: | modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module eth1
Sep 24 18:43:57 alien modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module eth2
Sep 24 18:43:57 alien modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module eth3
Sep 24 18:43:57 alien modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module eth4
Sep 24 18:43:57 alien modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module eth5
Sep 24 18:43:57 alien modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module eth6

The connection seems to be unstable, for a few minutes its fine, then it will be very slow for a long time, often over an hour, then it will be fine again for a while. Once I've connected to a server things are fine, ie it takes me ages to navigate a site, but downloading stuff will max my connection out.
netstat -a doesn't show any abnormal behaviour, my cpu is idling around 10%, ram usage is low, no spurious programs when I use ps -A etc. My net monitors aren't showing much activity either and ifconfig shows no dropped packets or any other problems. _________________ Some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them. |
