i have recently been able to put gentoo on my ibm thinkpad 570, i'll describe my experience with it now
Follow the Gentoo handbook very carefully...and i mean carefully
i did a stage 3 install without problems, until you get to compiling the kernel
then the configuring begins.
i used genkernel --udev --menuconfig all
a couple things you would want to activate
-alsa support
-neomagic graphics support
-cirrus logic 46xx crystal clear soundfusion audio
after the kernel is compiled, there's another problem...check /boot directory
and you'll noticce that the kernel is there but the initrd isn't, seems that
the initrd isn't really needed as said in the gentoo irc channel on freenode.
you'll get another file though i think it was called initramfs....something...
when you configure grub, or whatever bootloader you use, remember to use
the initramfs as a substitute for initrd.
well its working, so far but i havn't finished installing everything
right now i'm installing xorg, i'll keep you posted. _________________

well xorg is installed up and running, although you will run into a problem with the thinkpad trackpoint mouse
when you run Xorg -configure it'll report that the mouse is not configured. This problem is due to the new udev fs
all you have to do to remedy the problem is to modify the xorg config file and change the location of the mouse to
/dev/input/mice that should fix the problem. don't forget that you must add the mouse support in your kernel,
read up on this thread if your trackpoint still isn't working https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-164498-highlight-thinkpad+570.html
everything else seems to be fine.
Ibm Thinkpad 570 366mhz 128M ram 10gig hdd, stage3 gentoo install kernel 2.6.12-r4
Self built Dual(SMP) 866mhz P3, 1.5gig ram 40gig hdd, stage2 gentoo install kernel 2.6.11-r9 _________________
