I am finally getting around to upgrading from my old Celeron 466 processor. I am thinking that I'm going to purchase an Athlon processor. I don't know much about processors and wanted to get some input before I make my purchase. Which would be the better processor type to go with an Athlon Tbird or XP series?
Thanks in advance for the input!

The Althon Thunderbird series is getting a bit old now. Go for an Athlon XP. You can get good prices on them. The Athlon 64 and friends are probably going to be a good few months before they are value for money. |

Athlon thunderbirds were discontinued a long time ago so if you're buying new your only option is the Athlon XP. The Athlon XP features lower power consumption, hardware data prefetch, sse support and some minor other improvements. |

I had a T-bird until about 2 weeks ago. You can still get them for around $43 at NewEgg.com last time checked. For $82 you can get a XP 2400+ . That is what I just bought.
I'm with the others, for the money and to stave off upgrading for awhile would go with the XP. _________________ Support bacteria – they’re the only culture some people have.”

With an XP1800 around $50usd I can't see why anyone would want to buy a thunderbird. If you want something cheaper you can get an ECS motherboard (K7SOM+) with a Duron 1800+ soldered onto it for about $70usd.
A 1.4Ghz thunderbird uses a max 72watts while an XP1800 (1.53Ghz) thoroughbred is not only faster but only uses a max 51watts. |

keep in mind that it is the thoroughbred B that has the significantly lower wattage.... the A's still have high wattage as do the Palaminos. newegg sells some cpus that are specifically B's, eg the 2100+.

An XP1800 palomino uses max 66 watts so it's still less then the slower 1.4Ghz thunderbird. |
