PostPosted: Sun Sep 04, 2011 5:38 pm    Post subject: [Solved] Problems with slim Reply with quote

I recently emerged several applications, after which I was informed certain config files needed updating. After looking through the emerge manpage (as directed) I ran etc-update. I then decided to run to let it automerge all files (-3 option) thinking it would be safe  . This is a mistake I will not make twice!

First I was almost locked out of my own system as it seemed to have removed my old /etc/sudoers file with a default one, luckily using my gentoo boot usb I was able to replace the new one with a week old back up that I had kept. Now my problem is that slim refuses to let me login, and instead presents me with a 'failed to execute login command error'. My slim.conf appears untouched and the command in question sound. I have since discovered slim will allow me to login in with root but not with either my default non-root user or any newly made user.

Below are the parts of my /var/log/slim.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log that seem to be relevant (using tail -f whilst trying to login):

Code:
slim: waiting for X server to shut down

Hello,

for me,
Quote:
(EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
(EE) PreInit returned 8 for "KYE Optical Mouse"
(EE) PreInit returned 8 for "PC Speaker"

Looks like suspicious :
  • check if you've had this error before the upgrade. If yes, ignore my response :D
  • otherwise, check what has been upgraded, expecially regarding Xorg, your video drivers, ...
  • have a look on "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" and "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d" contents

Quote:
slim: waiting for X server to shut down

/usr/bin/xauth:  file /var/run/slim.auth does not exist

Do you have any error before that ?

Only the above mentioned (it loops round if I continue).

( Thank you both for responding. )

Just for fun, when I get myself in a situation that I am not sure how to get out of, first thing I do is;
Code:

emerge --sync
emerge -auND world
revdep-rebuild

won't hurt

Just had a chance to try it and have found I'm receiving unusual errors:
