Does anyone know of a program that will allow me to access a compressed archive (gzip, bzip, etc) like it was a seperate filesystem. I thought I saw something that would do this a while back, but I've been unable to track anything down.

Midnight Commander (emerge mc) allows you to do that. Just hit enter on selected file and there you go.

Actually if I remember correctly, the project I saw was a kernel module that would be able transparently compress/decompress archives -- programs wouldn't even know that they were working with a compressed file, it would just show up as another filesystem. I know I've come across such a thing before , I've just been unable to find it.
