I'm not really asking for help, but it's been 3 upgrades I've done recently and each time it breaks something... The first one I do not remember anymore, the second one is about poppler removing a function or library and all the apps depending on it being broken (LaTeX compilers, xournal, etc.)
And now, nvidia modules and the new X11 are fighting widely with one another...
The last time I tried to update, all out of the blue, portage wanted to remove all python flags (and perl i think) from all my packages...
Just WTF? Is it time for me to do a fresh install and it is my system that is messed up somehow or updating really is a risk for stability? |

New to Gentoo eh? The worst ones are the ones that break portage tools :o
It's always been like this, not exactly anyone's fault because there are so many variations available and tough to test every single combination. Just have to expect something to break each time you do a world update (naw, it's not really that bad, but there's always a chance when updating major version numbers)... Expect breakage once in a while, usually there's some way to fix things... Sometimes I'm not even sure a fresh install would fix things but possible. Make sure you make good use of revdep-rebuild and the (python, perl)-updaters...
So far I've yet to have to reinstall the whole thing due to a portage issue though.
(And yeah I have that nvidia/X11 conflict as well, not sure what to do with it yet, but likely time to get rid of the nvidia module, the card that went with it has long been dead and out of the machine...) _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD
