Hi,
I've got a gateway solo 9300 and its got little extra buttons (you know the sort - launch a web browser, adjust the volume, etc.) Is there any way to get them to do anything under Linux? Its not life or death or anything, just curious.

I use Gnome and the multi-media keys applet drives all the extra buttons with the exception of the volume control. Only because I use straight ALSA with no OSS emulation (no /dev/mixer) and I don't use ESD either because my sound card has hardware mixing. Other than that it works great. _________________ Gentoo: it's like wiping your ass with silk. |

You might be able to get these working with 'hotkeys'. I use this on my multimedia keyboard (not a laptop) and it works perfectly.
You can also use 'xev' to see what keycodes these keys are generating. If you put your mouse cursor in the xev window and hit a key and nothing appears in the terminal you launched xev from, then XFree86 can't recognise that key. If it can, great - hotkeys will do the rest.
Or use the Gnome method if that's easier - but I don't know anything about that. |
