Another noob here - with a problem. Having attempted a number of times to compile the kernel, I was at last successful. And now, having set the root password, Nothing else will 'emerge'. I have included the config.log output

-----

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by configure, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.63. Invocation command line was

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr --build=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu --host=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var/lib --libdir=/usr/lib64 --disable-dependency-tracking --disable-static

This one is so common that there's an entry in the FAQ for it. See GF20: C compiler cannot create executables. After looking at that, report back if you're still having issues. Also, when you report system output, it's more readable for all of us if you include it in "code" tags. :wink:

Edit: Most common of all, there's an error in your CFLAGS variable in your /etc/make.conf:
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 march=core2 -pipe"
should be
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=core2 -pipe"

That said, while I'm not really sure if this out-put would be different with the corrected flag, I thought I'd point out this as it caught my eye (or the other way round):

Code:
configure:2922: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -O2 march=core2 -pipe -Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed conftest.c >&5
 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc: march=core2: No such file or directory

Not like someone like me for example would have been able to say if this is normal or not, but I guess it might be a hint to some. ^^;

This what I got - I used the core2 flag because of the Dual-Core - should I just use "Pentium"? And will I need to re-compile the kernel?

It's not that core2 is the wrong architecture. In fact, I've confirmed that it's the right architecture. It's that a dash was missing from your "-march" compiler option. You wrote "march=core2" and you should've written "-march=core2". :wink:

John, thank you, you are entirely correct, (as Agent 86 said "missed by that much!") I have now completed the install, I can boot into a text screen, no graphics - still have a few problems, the net.eth0 did not connect, and I only have a text screen - more reading to be done. Thanks again, to you both, much appreciated.
