Can anyone recommend a graphical file manager for XFCE (or not. I just don't want to install Nautilus or 100 KDE packages just for a file manager) that has built-in file searching? It doesn't need to be fancy - just functional and something an intelligent non-computer geek can work with (this is for my girlfriend's Gentoo laptop).

You could install google desktop and allow it to index the home folder. You would get filename as well as file content search :)

http://desktop.google.com/linux/ (I can provide an ebuild if you want. b.g.o might also have an ebuild.)

EDIT: Oh no!! They have stopped providing google desktop :(

I've heard catfish is a nice tool. There are ebuilds out there, just not in Portage. I might give that a go. My gf has no trouble getting the hang of technical things as long as I show her what to do. She wouldn't mind a separate tool for file searching and would probably be just fine if I showed her how to use locate. I'm just trying to make it easier for her with a nice GUI.

She would have loved Google desktop.

Look at recoll too. If you search for "desktop search tools linux" you will come across reviews and it seems recoll generally comes up at the top. The fact that google-desktop is unavailable any more makes me rethink if I want to continue running the google desktop I have or should I switch to something else. In the long term, it is certain that google desktop will fail to run some day because of library changes, etc.
