i used to be able to just click on a bittorrent file link and bittorrent would fire up and start downloading automatically. now it dosent!! when i click on a torrent file it either displays a bunch of jibberish (opens the torrent like a txt file i think) or asks me to save/open the torrent somewhere. when i save the torrent i get the right torrent file but i dont know how to use bittorrent manually. can someone tell me how to start bittorrent manually or even better tell me how to get mozilla to open it automatically?
TIA! |

You just need to set up a helper application.
Go into Edit->Preferences...
Under Navigator click on Helper Applications.
in there click New Type ...
MIME type: bit-torrent
Description: whatever
extension: torrent
select Open it with: /usr/bin/btdownloadgui.py
this will automatically open up torrent files for you. _________________ t1deman |

you sure MIME-Type is bit-torrent ?
It either opens the file with mplayer-plugin (maybe because o the foo.avi.torrent ... that would be a bug in extension handling system...) or prints it like a text file...
and how would I use help applications with parameters ?
in example, I would like to use --max_upload_rate with btdownloadgui.py so I can still use some of my bandwith to at least read theses forums... |

No, the right MIME-type is application/x-bittorrent. try.

This worked for me....
application/x-bittorrent.
Don't forget the PERIOD at the end. This closes the ARGs.
Works great for me. |

How do you set this in Firebird?
There's no GUI that I can find for it, and the mime.types RDF file is confusing. And repetitive, at first glance anyway.
edit: I'm just using the "Things They Left Out" extension from the Firebird site. Supports changing mime types. Seems to be the easiest way to get this done. By the way, bt added its own mime-type, but it seems to be fucked, so I have to manually fix it. |

Actually, I can't use that plugin to set it. Trying to install it crashes Firebird. The latest builds suck ass, is why.
Forget it. I don't care enough. |

If you want to limit bandwidth easily get the experimental client (google) |

old thread, but maybe some are still interested in it.
you don't need to define it in each browser manually. i just used the kde control center >> kde components >> file association.
then like you said add a new file type, group "application", name it "x-bittorrent" (the . is not needed here). *.torrent extension, description whatever and as application choose as usual "btdownloadgui.py", wherever it is. works perfectly for me... tested it with mozilla firebird and konqueror so far.
i use the experimental bittorrent (with upload limit) btw, but is the same with the normal client anyway. |

I still have the problem. I upgrade to mailcap-r5 as well as made sure mailcap had the appropriate bittorrent line in it. I added a helper application in mozilla as instructed, with and without the trailing dot. Alos, I emerged various new, older and experimental clients, and they did not solve the problem. For some reason, when I first installed bittorrent (plain vanilla, 3 weeks ago) it worked beautifully. I can't remember whether or not I upgraded mozilla in that time. I really hope that re-emerging mozilla is not the solution. |

Some sites don't config their server for .torrent files to be torrent applications, so you'll end up with the torrent file beying displayed on your mozilla's screen.
In those case, save it on a file and launch
Code: | btdownloadgui.py filename.torrent |
Usually they do associate .torrent with the application, but it's not always (some big torrent link sites doesn't ) _________________ Saru mo ki kara ochiru - Japanese proverb.
