I am still fighting a screen resolution problem. I play around with emerging nvidia-drivers and then -uDNv world and then check /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.20-nvidia.conf

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Card0"
        Driver          "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier     "Screen 0"
    Device         "Card0"
    Monitor        "Monitor 0"
    DefaultDepth 24

    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport    0 0
        Modes       "1680x1050" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        Depth       16
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport    0 0
        Modes       "1680x1050" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        Depth       24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

It will work for a bit and then when I reboot............ BACK to 1024x768 when I want it to 1680x1050. I need help with this PLEASE!!!!

Hi treyb,
Try to set your resolution using the nvidia-settings program. Backup your running xorg.conf and run the nvidia-settings as root.

First, you should inspect Xorg log, your answer is likely there.
Second, if you want just one resolution why not set it in conf as the sole option.

treyb,
Usually the first mode is the default. Put the resolution you want in the beginning.

treyb,
It seems your monitor can't work with the resolution you want! Have you check the working resolutions of you monitor?
Did you try to write only one mode?

As I said, the first mode usually is the default one. You can put the resoltution you want in the beginning or make a test using just one mode. Give it a try.

In fact, driver is unable to get EDID and defaults to safe resolution. You should disable EDID check and force your favorite resolution in xorg.conf.

I thought udev was supposed to eliminate the need for a xorg.conf, however without the 20-nvidia.conf it will no detect screens.

The resolution I want is first............. "1680x1050" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Even though I want 1680x1050, I still want the ability to use the rest (this is the reason I did not have just that as the only res)

Also stupid question, How do I disable EDID

I had problems with my display size not correct.
I ended up with this xorg.conf.
Maybe it'll be useful to you.
Code:

Section "InputClass"
   Identifier "keyboard-all"
   Driver "evdev"
   Option "XkbLayout" "us_intl"
   Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"

   MatchIsKeyboard "on"
EndSection

Section "Device"
  Identifier "nvidia"
     Driver "nvidia"
  Option "RenderAccel" "true"
  Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
  Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
  Option "RandRRotation" "true"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "VideoCard0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    Option "UseEDIDDPI" "False"
    Option "DPI" "94 x 94"
EndSection

Section "Files"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib64/opengl/xorg-x11/extensions/"
EndSection

# (These data were taken from LP2475w edid)

   # EDID version 1 revision 3
Section "Monitor"
        # Block type: 2:0 3:fc
        Identifier "HP LP2475w"
        VendorName "HWP"
        ModelName "HP LP2475w"
        # Block type: 2:0 3:fc
        # Block type: 2:0 3:fd
        HorizSync 30-94
        VertRefresh 48-85
        # Max dot clock (video bandwidth) 170 MHz
        # Block type: 2:0 3:ff
        # DPMS capabilities: Active off:yes  Suspend:yes  Standby:yes
        Mode    "1920x1200"     # vfreq 59.950Hz, hfreq 74.038kHz
                DotClock        154.000000
                HTimings        1920 1968 2000 2080
                VTimings        1200 1203 1209 1235
                Flags   "-HSync" "+VSync"
        EndMode
        # Block type: 2:0 3:fc
        # Block type: 2:0 3:fd
        # Block type: 2:0 3:ff
        Option "DPMS" "True"
EndSection

I can change my resolution in KDE w/o problem.
Gerard.

If you are running the monitor on a kvm switch, that might be the source of your problem. The kvm switch might either don't report an EDID at all or report a default one. This behavior might change depending on the active input port. So you should try to run you monitor without the switch to ensure it's not the driver or the monitor. If the switch is causing the problem, you should try to start your xserver with the monitor active on your kvm. If it fails, you'll know the kvm is sending a bad EDID and you have to setup your monitor the old fashion way.

In X logs, it complained it couldn't read EEID, but I found no way to disable it.

Do you use a DE?

I created a /etc/X11/xorg.conf and it seems to work throughout the reboots. Below is what I got. Why is udev not doing what it is supposed to and forcing me to create the config file? Did I miss a kernel setting?

I just read the new post that for some reason did not report to me that were posted, but the KVM switch would screw up all the setting for udev? If it does this would be the reason why I am forced for a xorg.conf

Have a look on how i've get edid for my screen there : https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-894978-highlight-nvidia.html
Might help you.
And it's not udev, if nvidia cannot read your edid (and this might comes from your kvm switch), nvidia won't know what monitor you are using and default to classic svga (1024...)
