Hi,
i did
fdisk /dev/sda
like written inhttp://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=4

to partition my SATA2 160 GB disk. What I was wondering for is that in the past, in the partition overview, there were things written like:
Code: | /dev/sda1 * 1 14 105808+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 15 81 506520 82 Linux swap
/dev/sda3 82 3876 28690200 83 Linux |
for my finished partition it is:
Code: | /dev/sda1 u 0 65536 32768 83 Linux native
/dev/sda2 80325 1128901 524288 82 Linux swap
/dev/sda3 30009420 3125447575 141267577+ Linux native |
1. now, there is written on my harddisk after creating the first partition and pressing enter (while I should enter the first sector) "Value out of range". This seems wrong to me cause in the past this works on other IDE hds (normaly it should do autocomplete here as written in the manual).
2. The next strange behaviour for me is this that I want to create the third partition. Here I'm given:
Enter first sector: (65536-312544575) <--- THE SAME OFFER AS IN MY PARTITION 2 - STRANGE ! ?
If I do enter 65536 there is written, it is allready allocated. I should use as a third partition the whole disk 'whole disk'
Cause Sector 80325 is allocated. hmmm strange too.
Also Values like 550000 were not accepted here.
3. after all I can see this partition table above. I use w to write and am wondering, why the boot option appears here as "u" instead of the old expression "*"
4. Now I want to use: Code: | mkfs.ext2 /dev/sda1 |
to format my disk, here I receive an error no /dev/sda1 found.
Hmmm.
what's going wrong here? Is this due to the amd64 image? I got an AMD 1055+ 6 core cpu with 64 support. Or is the problem the new SATA 2 HD? I used IDE in the past every time.
Thanks for your help, mates. |

Seems like something is wrong, can you maybe delete all partitions and start over? Does it give the same thing?
It shouldn't have something to do with you using sata2 i.s.o. IDE, or with the amd64 image. This looks strange either way...
Alex.
EDIT:
PS: Similar behaviour described in this post:
