this week I installed my gentoo again. But I met this problem:

when I "emerge grub " or "emerge emacs", I got "failed to emerge:sys-devel/autoconf-2.68"&"emake failed"

why?

Post some of the debug output while it's compiling autoconf. I'd have to admit this seems to be a fairly obscure failure, just because I've never had autoconf fail build before...

I have also had this fail today whilst building a new box. Did this ever get resolved?

Thanks for your reply dE_logics. My output is below:

Code:
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U  ] sys-devel/autoconf-wrapper-10-r1 [8] 0 kB
[ebuild     U  ] sys-devel/autoconf-2.68 [2.65] USE="-emacs" 1,350 kB

Total: 2 packages (2 upgrades), Size of downloads: 1,350 kB

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- dev-java/blackdown-jre-1.4.2.03-r14::gentoo (masked by: sun-bcla-java-vm license(s))
A copy of the 'sun-bcla-java-vm' license is located at '/usr/portage/licenses/sun-bcla-java-vm'.

- dev-java/sun-jre-bin-1.6.0.11::gentoo (masked by: dlj-1.1 license(s))
A copy of the 'dlj-1.1' license is located at '/usr/portage/licenses/dlj-1.1'.

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

My system is very old and there are various things which are beginning to break. I was looking to reinstall Gentoo on my box but I kinda also want to go thru the 'pain' of fixing it so that I can better learn from the experience. Everytime that I start something now, it complains that it cannot start.

That is indeed a very outdated system. I suggest setting aside sys-devel/autoconf for now and focusing on other components. Make your gcc 4.4 active. Switch to a newer profile. Upgrade to a newer kernel, such as 2.6.39. Avoid using 3.0 for now. Some packages mishandle version numbers that do not start with 2.6, and you would need to update them to recognize 3.0. Update sandbox. Install dev-lang/python:2.7. Then, go back to doing general upgrades.

Thanks for this advice Hu. I am busy going through the updating of the packages you've mentioned; I've already upgraded the profile. However, would it be sensible to instigate:

Code:
emerge --update --ask world

or perhaps:

Code:
emerge --update --deep world

or:

Code:
emerge --update --deep --with-bdeps=y world

To update everything including the dependancies? Updating the system is not something I have done regularly and clearly this is the result. So I want to start off on the right foot. Have I missed anything?

I think, first of all you should with gcc-config select the current compiler. Then I would suggest even more:
Code:
emerge -NaDu --with-bdeps=y world --exclude autoconf
(although it might be that the --exclude is not even necessary: Once the other things are updated, it might be the autoconf just emerges).

OK cool, this is great news indeed mv and thank you for your input; I am very grateful for your advice. I thought I'd leave the kernel for the moment and ensure that everything else is installed. Can this be left until later?

Yes, but I would recommend to not leave out linux-headers and glibc (even if linux-headers is newer then your kernel). However, finally you should upgrade also your kernel - be it only for security reasons, since such an old kernel willl probably have gapping security holes.

Yes you are quite correct. Well I will get the system stable first and then look to the kernel. The box is hanging on a shoe string at the moment and it ought not to have been left to get to this stage - a word for the wise!

I will not go for the 3.x kernel for the moment, however do you have any experience with it? What are the main additional features?

Why not? gentoo-sources-3.0.6 is even declared stable. Everything under stable (for the kernel maybe even under ~ARCH) will likely have security issues. Unless you have a very particular kernel-related package for which you expect troubles because of the change in the version number scheme, I cannot see a reason not to use it.
Quote:

There were no tremendous changes, recently. However, compared with your kernel some obsolete drivers have thrown out. Do you already use the new PATA drivers for your disks (/dev/sd* instead of /dev/hd*)? This (and perhaps some udev-related changes, e.g. better use disk-label or uuid instead of /dev/sd* in /etc/fstab) might be the most severe issues for a kernel upgrade. But this will happen independent of whether you choose 2.6.new or 3.something. In fact, the change to 3.something is rather small - more or less the only possible issue is if you have some old scripts which rely on the old version number scheme.

OK, I will look at 3.0.6 when done, especially for security concerns.

I have an issue with glib though. I sorted out a few problems, but I can't seem to get past this error.

The error you provided is a problem with sys-libs/glibc, not dev-libs/glib. If I recall correctly, that error can be caused by using an old sys-devel/gcc. Did you switch to gcc 4.4 as I suggested previously?

The version I upgraded to is: 4.5.3-r1. Is this too high a version?

Code:
sys-libs/glibc

Certainly not: Stable gcc and stable glibc should work together. Are you sure that you did not forgot to switch the version with gcc-config?

I don't completely understand. What do you mean by to 'switch' the version?

If you just emerge a new version of gcc, it will not be used automatically. You must first select the new version by calling
Code:
gcc-config -l
gcc-config number_of_the_new_version_listed_by_the_previous_command

I will definiately try this when I get in later mv. Thanks for the info, I'll update you guys later. Hopefully I can continue with the updates. I'm glad at least that I haven't got to rebuild the box entirely as had been suggested previously.

I forgot to add: After using gcc-config, you must source /etc/profile.env (or use a new shell). With gcc -v you can see whether the switch was successfull.

OK, have switched compiler:

Code:
foo ops # gcc-config 4.4.4
 * Switching native-compiler to i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.4.4 ...

However, having gone through /etc/pam.d I found the only file to be using pam_pwbd which was 'user add' so moved the file elsewhere and emerged pam again. This time it completed ok. But does pam not need to use 'user add' for authentication? What module is replacing 'useradd' for users?

I cannot help here, since I do not use pam. However, I would suppose that pam provides reasonable default configuration files.
