PostPosted: Sun Nov 06, 2011 1:10 pm    Post subject: kde4 starts and blends to blackscreen after coming up Reply with quote

Hi,

i have installed kde4 with nividia but without HAL.

*There are following failures in Xorg.0.log:
(EE) Faild to load module "dri" (module does not exist, 0)
...
(EE) Faild to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)
...
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Faild to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)
...
(EE) HID 046a:0023: failed to initialize for relative axes

*If i execute startkde:
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server

Executing "startx" or "/etc/init.d/xdm start" boots KDE well (but the Failures in Xorg.0.log ).
When he should blend over from booting screen to the desktop, he blends to the blackscreen with the movable mouse icon.=(

Would be nice if somebody could help me.

Greetings
user10000

first 3 errors are dri related, I think you should be able to load the driver without 3d acc.
last error is input related.

let me see if I understood you, you boot xdm, you see kde and when you finish kde boot, your screen go black.

if so, drop to shell and paste the content of dmesg and /var/log/kdm.log please.

Yes exactly, this is the beavior of my system actually.

I have vergotten that while starting xdm there is a message:
" ?/tmp/144.../.kde4/share/config/kderc? is not writeable.

I just klick the OK button here.

This week im not able to give you the Kernel Ring Buffer information and kdm.log,
because i need some USB stick and i m not here this week.
Would be nice to have some way to post here from console...

My be this helps:
-I do not use HAL
-I have "Linux version 3.0.6-gentoo runing
-OpenGL is nvidia and i think the drivers is working well.

-In /var/log/kdm.log i can find following failures:
"KConfigIni: in file /tmp/1952136119/.kde4/tmp-localhost/kconf_updateGk3192.tmp, lin1: " Invalid entry (missing '=')
kded4:Fatal IO error: client killed
knotify4: Fatal IO error: client killed
unnamed app(blablabla): Communication problem with "knotify", it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply": " " Message did not receive a reply ( timeout by messagebus)" "

Perhaps this is the same as the following topic: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6764614-highlight-.html#6764614
which deals with problems with the newer nvidia-drivers.

In that forum I offered the following solution:
Quote:
solved this problem in
---------> system settings
-------------> Desktop effects
--------> advanced

By choosing Compositing type Opengl
disable the enable direct rendering box.
enable use vsync.

Others had other solutions:

I now use compiz rather than kwin, but I did switch to kwin to see if my posted solution still worked for me.

This time I had to choose Compositing type Xgl but it didn't seem to mater whether or not I had direct rendering.
Perhaps experimentation is in order. Of course there are no guarantees that this will work for you. Let me know how it does turn out.

Hint: You can edit the kde system settings from outside KDE as follows: log on to another minimilist window manager
(may favourite is icewm) open an xterm and type systemsettings

PS what version of nvidia-drivers are you using.

you first suggestion won't work as he cannot use kde.

this indeed might be a driver issue but we need to know the driver's version.

You don't need to use kde to change the kde settings:

Quote:

i.e. from any terminal in any window manager you can get
the kde systems settings manager by typing the command

systemsettings (followed by enter)

This will open the kde settings manager and allow you to change the settings while not in kde.
After making the changes, you can try kde again.

your comment was first on how to do that visually, usually people don't notice the rest.

also I suspect he cannot run any other WM so I'm not sure if he can do that.
of course this can be done usibg shell but still...

This seems to suggest something odd is going on in your home directory. First thing I'd suggest is to try with a new clean user. You could also remove the ~/.kde* files and dirs, but make sure you double think about it. Some applications like the silly kmail might put important files in there. So, again, double think about it before removing this directory.

From memory, there's app-text/pastebin and wgetpaste in portage. Install one of those. You should be able to use them like this

Code:
cat /etc/make.conf | wgetpaste

or

Code:
emerge --info | wgetpaste

It will upload your output to pastebin and give you a link that you can paste here.

Another way is to install xsel and use it the same way to put the output into your cut buffer, then use links or w3m (command lines browsers) to reach this forum and use shift+insert to paste. I have no idea if this will work on CLI, though.

Another way is to use screen or tmux, which have this capability built-in, this works from the command line as long as all the involved applications are running inside a tmux or screen session. It takes some effort to learn how to use them, though.

Yet another way is to use "emerge --info > out.txt", then host the file somewhere so we can reach it.

Oh, and, even if I have not use proprietary drivers for years, the last time I checked those DRM message from nvidia should be normal. If that hasn't changed, they don't use the linux DRM stack, the driver does its own thing, so just ignore those.

Besides that, what I'd do would be:

  • put "consolekit udev dbus policykit" in your USE flags.
  • emerge -auDvN world
  • make sure udev and consolekit are running, add them to the default runlevel if needed.
  • add xdm and configure it to start kdm, reboot and see.

Instead of removing it I would do the following:
Code:
mv ~/.kde4 ~/kde4-backup-date

Regarding dbus, my KDE displays graphics just fine AND systemsettings works,
even without dbus running,
although of course lots of other things don't work then. So I doubt that dbus is the basic cause of this problem.

If i92guboj's suggestion doesn't work, I would suggest trying the nv drivers, as follows:

  • change the appropriate line in /etc/make.conf to read VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia nv"
  • run emerge -uvDN @world
  • run eselect opengl list and eselct opengl set to choose the opengl driver
    (NOT THE NVIDIA driver)
  • mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf-backup-date to make sure that /etc/X11/xorg.conf is not breaking things.
  • Reboot ( a bit of overkill here, but it is a sure way to make sure that the new settings
    are taking effect.

Added in Edit:

I confirm that this is still true today.

while updating i have got the problem that
net-libs/libgadu
wants to have a Version of
libpng12.so.0
.

But i have found
usr/lib/libpng15.so
on my system

When i execute emerge -upv net-libs/libgadu
there is a ERROR on compile phase
"Error while loading shared liberaries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

So should i downgrade libpng ???

No You should have 2 versions of libpng installed specifically:

[*] 1.2.?, and
[*] 1.4.? or 1.5.?

I suspect that recently you upgraded 1.4.? to 1.5.? This upgrade is quite problematical
and can badly break many things unless done with great attention to detail.

The upgrade instructions were given in a news item and can be read using the command eselect as root.

Code:
eselect news list    and then eselect news read  (you give the appropriate number)

In particular the listed topic https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-894950.html

is of immense help.

Let us know how it goes.
Good luck

added in edit:

(1) If you have installed eix already
the command
Code:
 eix libpng|grep  "Installed versions"
should tell you what versions are installed.

For example on my machine I get:
Quote:
eix libpng|grep "Installed versions"
Installed versions: 1.2.46(1.2)(08:45:26 AM 06/11/11) 1.5.5(09:11:52 AM 07/11/11)(apng -static-libs)

so the installed versions are 1.2.46 and 1.5.5.
Please let us know what you find.
(2) I think that the upgrade of libpng-1.4.? to 1.5.? becomes more difficult if the detailed instructions are not followed immediately after the upgrade.

O.K. then you do have the correct versions of libpng installed.

However the error message
Quote:
When i execute emerge -upv net-libs/libgadu
there is a ERROR on compile phase
"Error while loading shared liberaries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

makes it sound as if you haven't yet followed the detailed upgrade instructions as mentioned above.

It is crucial that you read https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-894950.html

and follow its directions as soon as possible or you will find that a lot more than just kde is broken.
Of course there is no guarantee that this will solve your kde problem, but it is an essential first step as (whether you realize it or not yet) lots else is currently broken.

Please let us know how it goes.

Good luck

I also had the

"/tmp/xxx.../.kde4/share/config/kderc" is not writeable.

Solved it by

emerge -v kdm

I hope this helps someone who doesn't want to search for a fix as long as I did :-)

The black screen comes after the displaymanager/login screen?
That means imho that some part of kde is missing or not working. But I am not very familiar with kde, just using it, so I can't really help you... What I would try in your situation is

- check /var/log/kdm.log
- check /var/log/daemon.log
- try "emerge plasma-workspace"

Running "emerge plasma-workspace" worked for me. Not sure how it became missing from my system...
