|
|
I chose to build the kernel manually because I used to think using Gentoo means DIY. But after a few times of failing to boot my computer (see my post if you want to help me: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-901054-highlight-.html), I finally made up my mind to use genkernel, which I thinks is a little against with the spirit of Gentoo.
Now I have the following questions:
1, If I have no problem with the Gentoo installation CD, I will be OK with genkernel. Is that right?
2, Now that I have already made some changes to the default configuration, can I just run "genkernel all" to make it work? If not, what are the proper steps?
3, As I read the Gentoo Docs, I found that many other topics, such as power management, hardware 3D acceleration need special kernel configuration. Will genkernel do that for me?
4, Is it possible to use both genkernel and manually built kernel on my computer without any special setup?
5, Do you have any other suggestions for me? _________________ All operating systems suck. This one just sucks less. |

Also, I have heard people say the minimal installation CD will auto detect your hardware, and if you boot from it and run Code: | # zcat /proc/config.gz > /usr/share/genkernel/arch/x86/kernel-config | and then Code: | # genkernel --menuconfig all | You will see all your hardware part is configured properly. Is that right?
My major concern is the device driver part. _________________ All operating systems suck. This one just sucks less. |

Look at the right upper corner. There is a link to all unanswered posts. Some of us come here and click it. By replying to your own post you just disqualified your thread as unanswered.
Any Linux CD will try and detect your hardware, which has not much to do with /proc/config.gz as far as your actual hardware is concerned. Default config merely determines which drivers will be probed. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.
