nano,top,mplayer using 100% cpu

the thing is that it is not only nano that crashes, so does mplayer, and even top, + some other apps..

I have discovered this error using any of the 2.6-kernels, but never in the 2.4.*

is there anything one can do to fix this? It surely is annoying.
