|
|
I'm running 2.4.20-ck6, but i want to upgrade to something more currant, however i can't boot with any ner kernels
2.4.22-aa1: Hangs at Net4: Unix Domain Sockets 1.0/SMP for Linux Net4.0 even with acpi=off
for the record 2.4.20 pauses here and then goes on, after saying something to the effect of ds: no socket drivers loaded
2.6.0 (and all 2.5): hangs at a filesystem error. Code: | cannot open root device hde2 or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) |
I have reiserfs compiled natively. and / is hde2
2.4.22-ck2 won't build.
Code: |
sched.c: In function `load_balance':
sched.c:1044: error: structure has no member named `sleep_timestamp'
|
I'll update this with specfics, but i goot reboot to get output. over and out. _________________ Aim:gsfgf0

What about if you boot with the kernel option acpi=off? One of my machines, a VIA Epia 800, freezes up just after starting with 2.4.22 if this isn't supplied. I have the same problem on my VIA chipset equipped desktop running 2.6 (haven't tried 2.4.22). Others are reporting ACPI-related freezes with 2.6 as well.
Basically if 2.4.20 is working for you I'd suggest you stick with it. I reckon 2.4.23 will be out within a month, and they've done some ACPI fixes already (heck, if you want to you can probably just download the latest 2.4.23pre and try that).

I got an error similar to the first one once, (can't mount root) because I forgot to include my file system type into the kernel instead of making it a module. So in my case ext3 = Y instead of = M. Try the same for your FS. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe

Assume , you compiled kernel with initrd support.
Check your bootloader config file. |

I'm getting that now with test5-mm4
Everything was working fine with test5-mm3
Could the person mentioning the initrd provide a few more details ?
btw. checked and double-checked that reiserfs is set to Y and not M..
I seem to have an error in my mm-sources-2.6.0_beta5-r4.ebuild it first patches with epatch then with the standard patch method.. patch comes out asking whether is should assume -R .. _________________ Once there was a time when all people believed in God and the church ruled. Initrd is needed when you are compiling file system as module.
In that case maybe problems are related to kernel. |

This has been covered a number of times. You have to use a root=#### reference instead of root=/dev/hdx. I posted a detailed explanation in early threads about 2.6 kernels:

so how can i figure out what the major device number is? It's on a separate ide card. I and is it ##02 or ##42? In other words does renumbering restart when i move to the card? And is this a bug, or is it intentional. _________________ Aim:gsfgf0 |

What you mean talking about ide card? |

what is the 4 digit number for hde2? It doesn't seem that hard, but his post doesn't tell what to do for drives other than hda and hdb. I assume since they have the same major device number, it refers to the chanel. So what about other drives. This doesn't seem like that hard of a question. _________________ Aim:gsfgf0 |

I just realized that 2.6 is not detecting the IDE card. I'm using the driver and it works fine in 2.4. What should i do? _________________ Aim:gsfgf0 |
