I already have gentoo installed on my laptop. If I change the USE flag of grub an re-emerge it, do I have to run grub-install to reinstall it? _________________ All operating systems suck. This one just sucks less. |

fangwen,
emerge -N ... rebuilds and reinstalls packages with changed USe flags so that the new flags take effect.
There are a couple of oddballs to that. The ones that come to mind are grub and the kernel.
emerge grub will attempt to install grub into /boot for you but thats only a part of the update. Grub is in three parts, stage1, stage1.5 and stage2
Stage2 is in /boot/grub and its used from there at boot time. Stage1 and stage1.5 are there too but they are never used from /boot. They are installed outside of filesystem space.
Stage1 goes into the MBR and stage1.5 follows it in the unused space before the first partition.
This means you must install grub to the MBR again to get a consistant grub install. If you mix and match grub may not work, you will find out when the next boot fails. _________________ Regards,

Thank you. Now I am quite clear about that. _________________ All operating systems suck. This one just sucks less. |
