IPTables script

Hi all.
I've always used GUI firestarter to setup the firewall on my dasktop machine.
I want to get away from that and maybe learn iptables.
To that end would you all give me suggestions for good iptables scripts that I can play around with and edit to my needs?
Also, once edited where does sucj a script get installed?

I guess all U need can be found here: http://netfilter.samba.org/documentation . To start my firewall I've made an entry to "/etc/conf.d/local.start".
