[solved]X is stuck, cannot login, need to get into text mode

Dear All,

after many updates and days without rebooting, when I now switch on my laptop I get stuck with the X login where keyboard and touchpad are not responding, so that I have to halt brute force.

I want to start up the machine in text mode so that I can try to fix what's wrong first.

I found this gentoo wiki that seemed to be just what I needed: edit the grub and tell the machine that I want the text mode

I did try both procedures (adding '1' and 'softlevel=single') but none of them worked. I still get stuck with the freezed X screen.

What shall I do? Is there a better (=that works) way to use grub for this purpose? Thank you all

When you get to X (where your keyboard and touchpad are nonresponsive) press the following key combinations:
1. Press Alt+SysRq+R (press all these three keys together, or if you want a more step by step method then press Alt first, then keeping Alt pressed, press SysRq and then keeping both pressed, press R. SysRq is usually written under the Print or PrtSc key)
2. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 (this will take you to a terminal).
3. Once you are at your terminal, emerge all xorg drivers.
4. And for next time: read the elogs. You will save yourself much trouble.

EDIT: To answer your original query: you can get into single level by simply adding "single" at the end of your boot line in grub. In Gentoo you can also give "softlevel=boot" to start up in the boot runlevel.

It's a few years I have been using gentoo now, and never heard of this.
