I just updated my system (I think it contained a kdelibs update) and now kate won't emerge or run from a terminal window. I will continue to run from the "K" menu, however.

Emerge failure is as follows:

When I try to run kate from the command line, it fails as follows:

    jc@bopper ~ $ kate Signature.txt
kate: error while loading shared libraries: libattica.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    jc@bopper ~ $

I have tried doing revdep-rebuild, python-updaters and also re-emerging attica. This does not change the problem.

emerge --info follows:

    jc@bopper ~ $ emerge --info kate

You need dev-libs/libattica not kde-base/attica.

I actually tried emerging libattica before I tried attica. It didn't help.

I still have the same problem.

The output of:
> ldd /usr/bin/kate | grep libattica.so
and
> find /usr/{lib,lib64} | grep libattica.so

The problem was eventually resolved by re-emerging kdelibs, which had a new version released the day before I noticed the problem.

Thanks to all for their help.

I just had a similar problem with Kile-2.1.2-r1 failing to build. Again, a revdep-rebuild (which rebuild kdelibs) fixed this. It seems to me that portage should have emerged kdelibs before trying to emerge kile but, for some reason, it does it after. Is this down to a missing dependency or something that causes portage to build in the wrong order or, is this just unavoidable?
