I'm currently running Debian sarge/sid, I decided to try gentoo to see if there was much benefit, so I moved everything from my hda8 16GB share partition over to my 25GB hdb5 share partition, formatted hda8 to ext2 and tried to copy in the stage1 tarball. It said that it couldn't because it was on a "Read-only file system".
After about an hour of WTF, I looked up dmesg to see what the kernel was saying. This is what it says when I try to mount hda8:
FAT: Did not find valid FSINFO signature.
Found signature1 0x0 signature2 0x0 sector=1.
Directory 1: bad FAT

Filesystem panic (dev 03:08).
FAT error
File system has been set read-only
Some more investigation (ide-smart, badblocks) indicated that the HD is fine. I've tried formatting again, both ext2 and ext3, but it always leads back to the same problems.
Ideas? |

How stupid. It was trying to mount it as VFAT. There's no fstab entry for hda8, so I'm not sure why it was assuming VFAT. but if I force it to mount as ext2, it works fine |
