Hi!
I just found out that my system couldn't display man pages anymore. Less was missing.
No big deal, I emerged less BUT now the man pages are badly malformatted with a lot of "esc" sign in it. WTF?
And why did portage tell me that "less" is part of my system profile when it wasn't even installed before?

Make sure your /etc/profile.env is up to date (did you dispatch-conf or etc-update?)

In any case you need the variable "LESS" to contain '-R' for less to interpret esc- ANSI color codes (ugly hack, but probably no uglier than backspace bolds).

As for the dependencies I think virtual/pager probably had something to do with it. Seems you need either less, more, most, util-linux, lv, or vim pager installed, have any of those still installed? (I install 'less' on every machine... haven't tried without it...)

Still weird that it broke... it was working?

Hello!
Yes, it was working. Well, with your hint I found out about "eselect pager" which was not set. I set it to "less" and voila, it works :) Less was uninstalled by emerge --depclean some time ago, no idea why.
Well, it is working again now, thanks!
