I know ALSA is able to detect them as I'm able to get VLC to use the headphones, but not every application supports the audio configuration (like VLC). Is there a way to get my USB headphones to work ?

Any advice & help will be greatly appreciated.

I like pulseaudio because it moves audio configuration out of each individual program and into a shared control program (pavucontrol). Pulseaudio can pretend to be an ALSA card so programs that aren't re-written to support the pulseaudio API can still be managed by it.

The Wiki is a good place to start (it looks like the unofficial wiki, the second link, actually has a better page right now for pulseaudio), and google is always helpful:

Now do I first remove alsa and then install pulseaudio ? Because the tutorials don't specify if I'm required to do so. Thanks

No. ALSA is the sound driver you're going to be using, whereas pulseaudio is the sound server. This means that programs will connect to pulseaudio, and then pulseaudio will route their sound output to the correct ALSA device. Your original setup didn't have a sound server, which means that each program was in charge of routing to the correct ALSA device by itself (and some programs handle this poorly, which is why pulseaudio helps).
