Is Notepad++ available as an ebuild? I'd like to use it in Gentoo as it's my favourite editor for both plain text and HTML when I'm in Windows.

Hi, doesn't look like there is a linux version of this exact program. It is just for windows since it makes use of the windows API. I would suggest trying other editors, notepad++ is based on the Scintilla editor, so try
Code:
emerge scite
and see if you like it. For more complicated development try kdevelop if you don't mind installing some kde libs.

Also, to figure out if something is in portage look in the online package database or
Code:
emerge -s package
:)

No, that is a windows program. gedit, kate, and scite are some simple linux alternatives.

When you are ready and have a little time to invest, you can start learning a real editor like vim.
Code:
emerge vim gvim

Much faster is
Code:
emerge -u eix
emerge --sync && update-eix
eix <packagename>

Yes eix is newer, much faster, and better all around.

Another editor that is similar to Notepad is nedit. Simple and fast, although not fancy.

Just to add some thoughts to an old thread: Notepad++ is much more advanced than some editors mentioned here (for the (g)vim guys: there are some folks who are just not interested in gazillions of keyboard shortucts and cryptic macro languages), too bad it doesn't run with Wine (might be a comctl32 problem?). So far I settled with Jedit, but Jedit is way too robust and unresponsive compared to npp (which I use at my workplace) :(

You can always start with evim and then make your way up the vim ladder :)
