I installed the 0911 gentoo 1.4. And emerge -k kde from the GRP. Then I did xf86config. The settings are fine coz I can have twm running with mouse and keyboard and screen. Then I created .xinitrc with only one line "startkde". Then I "startx", the blue background of the KDE comes up, but also a dialog box saying "Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation". Why?

Thanks

Have you searched the forums. There may be some that are not exact matches, but lead you to a clue.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=78967&highlight=startkde

Look in the /var/log files specifically:
/var/kdm.log
/var/XFree86.0.log

Try it as root, see if it works, the probably permission issue.

I was logged in as root. I know I need to "chmod 777 /tmp" in order to let other users to start kde. The strange thing is that Gnome works, but KDE doesn't. I installed both from the GRP.

Could be a grp thing. If have the time, install from source (via ebuilds), then if works, fill out a bug report.

I have the same problem, I installed gentoo at work (as well :) ) and I wanted to have a full system up fast but this error popped up.

I'll leave the comp to compile kde during the weekend.

If the GRP works for somebody please post a reply so that I dont have to throw away my LiveCDs.

Solved in thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=86826

Code:

emerge -k libart_lgpl
