OK - I don't know if this is the right forum to ask this, but I'm having some very odd browser problems.

Opera (both emerge V6 and the shell install v7) both are massive - the font size on the desktop (15" Mazellan @ 1024x768) are about an inch high, the browser window spreads across at least two virtual desktops sideways (and I did type 'No' when asked about virtual desktop)

Graphics - NVidia (emerged) with Gentoo 2.4.20 kernel.

As well as that, I did try Firebird and got the cryptic message 'Ask your Sys Admin for a log-in and password' before it stopped the emerge with an error. I did try an emerge both as user using sudo and again as root.

Two browsers - neither of which will let me go online

Daithi

a nice thing to have is: corefonts

Code:
emerge corefonts

to reduce the font size: hit CTRL and - (minus)
or hit CTRL and scroll down.

you can alsa try locateing some thing like: Decrease font size, in the menu's.

I already tried the Ctrl - trick - no luck at all and I also went to the menus (well - I guessed which menu was which until I found the right one) and reduced all fonts to the absolute minimum - absolutely NO effect on the initial startup screen (in Opera that is - still can't get Firebird to even install)

I'll try the corefonts and see what happens (and then I can stop having to reboot to use IE to post here)

What does
Code:
xdpyinfo | grep resolution
give you? On a 15" screen with 1024x768 resolution the given DPI should be around 85 to 95. Make sure both numbers (before and after the 'x') are the same.

Opera (and most other proper applications) scale their fonts in relation to the DPI. If the DPI is incorrectly set, then wrong font-sizes will occur.

If the DPI looks weird, then it can be set manually when starting X:
Code:
startx -- -dpi 90

You can manually select which fonts to be used in Opera from the File->Preferences menu. Make particularly sure the global minimum font size is set relatively small.

Thanks for the info khybber

There are two answers to that:#

under the generic XFree 'nv' drivers I get 75x75 both in command line and an x terminal
BUT - emerging the nvidia-kernel (4420) I only get "" in command line and 123x15 in an x terminal

It looks very like a problem with the nvidia drivers
Card is a Geforce2 MX400 64 MB

Oh - one other thing that happens - with the nv drivers, everything is fine - using nvidia the logout screen shrinks to a totally unreadable size

I've tried using the direct download from the NVidia website btw - when I do that it stops working after a reboot (the /dev entries go for a hike somewhere)

This gets even more puzzling :?

You should most likely use the emerged nvidia-kernel drivers (I use them successfully).

123x15? That's totally crazed! Did you try manually setting the DPI?

That problem occurs with the emerged nvidia drivers

I can start with the manual settings and it works, but surely that shouldn't be necessary

The default with the emerged drivers is, as you say, crazy but that's what it comes up as

Problem cured

Turned out in the end that all I had to do was manually edit the XF86Config file and add the following
Section "Monitor"
DisplaySize "(width)(height)"

where the width and height are in millimetres (in my case 282 212)

Hope this might help anyone else with the same problem - XF86Config doesn't enter those values (or even ask for them)
