In short, what are most needed config files and such,
that should be copied somewhere safe in case of reinstalling gentoo
,
so I do not need to 'con-figure-out' config files and such
once I am reinstalling gentoo on same machine?

Long version: sad funny story, true story...

So I administrate some web site, and I have ftp and back access to site.
Last week something terrible happened, none of my two laptops (both gentoo) could not connect to site via ftp, nor could I administrate web site, ( actually none of web-sites that I administrate did not responde),
even more over, on my girlfriends ubuntu I could not access either!!! Of browsers I tried ff, opera and surf.

And there were things that client wanted to be done on website...

I went to my neighbor to try it out on his windows machine ... it worked flawlessly... ?!?

So here comes the rush hour,
I sacrifice one of my laptops and installed some M$ OS, so I can work...
(it was not my proud moment, ... ... Deleted by Neddyseagoon)

I made changes on web site and client was happy.

It took two updates before things started to work normally on my gentoo again,
and I do not know what was wrong, and would like just to forget about it,
and writing this down will help me not to forget...? which makes me afraid again,
what is problem comes back...?

Now I need to preform voodoo evil
to remove infection from my sacrificed laptop
and put gentoo back on it,
and I know it would be easier if I had some saved files to look at...

Thank you for your time

I usually just copy the /etc directory to eg: /home/etc-2011; then if I run
into problems configuring stuff I have a reference. /etc doesn't take up
much space.

The other thing you need of course is the dot files in /root.

In addition, at least, you need the kernel .config file.

hello cwr,

aha, must say, it has been a while since I last visited /root, and was quite surprised to see so many dot files...

and /home/user for my personal settings I guess is also wise...

Well I will start slowly with installation, and will know for next time, kheh...

Don't forget /var/lib/portage/world for the list of packages you installed, and a local overlay if you have one.

while true,

Fix it, learn from it.
Reinstalling is a bad idea you learned from another OS.

Oi NeddySeagoon,

there is nothing to solve... no gentoo... I installed MS OS on bare metal... it was intelligent decision, as in having provided solution in quite short time, but I killed gentoo along the way...

As a newbie (kheh, I have to reconsider using phrase me being newbie) I crippled my gentoo in ways I do not want to remember, and I brought it back, (and we still love each other) so I too nurse idea of maintaining and curing system, but the tragic situation is that I have no system to cure... Need new installation...

Yes, although there should be a symlink so it should be at "/usr/src/linux/.config". Check
Code:
uname -r
to make sure you're running what you think you're running.
