|
|
Well, I got the itch to install KDE 3.2 alpha 2 (I have been hopping from WM to WM....gnome 2.4 > xfce4 > kahakai), and I must say, it is very impressive.
It does take the longest to load though, but that is not such a big deal, as I keep reboots to a minimum. I think it is very nice, in that it makes changing system settings very easy. For some reason, it seemed more scattered in Gnome.
KDE is almost worth it just for SuperKaramba...the weather applet just looks so slick ....but I cannot get SK to do any sort of smooth mouseovers, it has some major lag.
I like the panel behavior of the KDE one over the gnome one, as it is easier to change the hide delay.
But, for some reason, after installing KDE (the cvs version with the script by iamlarryboy), I only get sound out of one of my speakers. I have a Labtec 2.1 setup, and before everything was peachy....but now it is no go.Only the left front works....maybe arts screwed alsa up somehow? _________________ Face it, we are all noobs.
On the box it said it was designed for Win XP or better, so why won't it work with Linux? |

EDIT: 'killall -9' made artsd stop.
Even then,. when I open up xine with 'xine -A alsa' and play the matrix trailer, I only get front left. It is really strange. Maybe Alsa has the other ones muted? How could I check?
And then, when i try to access KIOSlave via konq, i get this:
Code: |
An error occurred while loading settings:/KIOslave:
The process for the settings protocol died unexpectedly. |

Have you run kmix and made sure that the balance is set to the center? _________________ Yes. |

You can emerge alsa-utils (I think that's the one), and run alsamixer to check for any muted or 0-volume channels. |

Sorry I wasnt clear. type settings:/ into the konq bar. It (as is all the things that end in :/ such as help:/, man:/, lan:/, fish:/ etc.) are called KIOslaves. _________________ OH MY GOD! Kenny just killed Kenny!

I had done that, but I did it again with a fine tooth comb, and low and behold, half of the DAC and the other one next to it were turned down!
How that happeened I have no earthly idea!
Oh well, thanks to everyone for the ideas and patience. _________________ Face it, we are all noobs.

Another kde 3.2 related suggestion, if you want a OSX-like shadow (for better background shading/contrast), put this in your kdesktoprc: (hopefully this appears in the GUI before beta1)
Code: |
[FMSettings]
ShadowConfigName=OS X
ShadowCurrentScheme=0,1,16.0,192.0,2,4,0
ShadowEnabled=true
ShadowTextBackground=invalid
ShadowTextColor=1,1,1
|
If you already have a FMSettings section, just add it to that. If you have a dark background I recommend right cliking on the desktop->configure desktop->backgrounds->advanced and setting the background text color to yellow (high contrast, looks great with a shadow). If you have a light background I recommend using white as the background text color. _________________ what up |
