Hello

I am setting up Gentoo for the first time. The instructions were pretty clear and I got all the way up to configuring X.

When I do the -configure, I get "The number of created screens does not match the number of detected devices" and then it fails.

I used genkernel to build my kernel. I searched and I found this thread and this thread. I tried to follow that advice and I installed evdev and some other things, but nothing seemed to help.

I have Windows dual-booting on the same machine and the graphics card in Windows identifies as Intel Q965/Q963 Express Chipset. The computer itself is a Dell Optiplex 745. I have it connected to the monitor via DVI.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

X -configure does not work with KMS. Make sure that you have configured the kernel as in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml (genkernel --menuconfig). Then set your login manager in /etc/conf.d/xdm and run /etc/init.d/xdm start.

It's working!
Thanks so very much!

One more very simple question...

When I run the command you gave (/etc/init.d/xdm start) I get KDE starting, which is what I want.
But when I do a plain startx, I get a default x session with three plain text consoles in it.
I do have kdm specified in /etc/conf.d/xdm
Shouldn't kdm start when I do startx if kdm is listed as the display manager I want in /etc/conf.d/xdm?
I don't have anything specified in RC.conf for this either...

If you want to set the default session for startx, create /etc/env.d/90xsession as described in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml#doc_chap3_sect3

Thank you very much for your help!

I am now typing this on my brand-new fully-functional Gentoo machine.
