Hello,

I got a second hand HP's Modular Smart Array 30 disk bay. I'm on way as well to own a VHDCI controler (Adaptec 39320) for a PC.

  • Is this kind of hardware compatible with Gentoo ?
  • how to configure disks ? I mean, I don't care about RAID at all, I would like to see each and every disk individually.

I read conflicting thing on the internet and I duno if the disk configuration is done at the bay level (as with my old Syred one), or from the controler ...

Thanks for your tips.

Hi,

It is probably compatible. The Adaptec 39320 appears to have a driver for Linux, so that and all devices attached to it should work.

It would probably be a good idea to boot that system with the Gentoo LiveCD and get the output of lspci -k
That should tell you the modules used to drive that hardware, giving you a list of what kernel modules need to be configured when you install Gentoo.

As for how to configure the array, I'm not sure. I would start by reading any documentation you can find for that array.

As per information I got from other forum, this carte is supported on Linux ... so Gentoo as well :D

That's really the problem : the only information I got is for HP-UX and OpenVMS.
I found also on the net some (old) messages about people being able to run this hardward on Linux as well ... but I duno how they did the disk configuration.

Hi,

In that case, your only option is probably to boot that system with the Gentoo LiveCD and see how the controller and array are detected.
