Hello,
As a non-root user I am not able to start simple things like jconsole or visualvm when the java vm is set to Java 7. It works when switching the user-vm to Java 6 (Sun). The symptom is that the java task seems to hang without displaying anything. A simple java -version exits properly after giving me details in both cases. I have synced my system to the latest. What could be the reason?
Cheers,
Kai |

It could be (and it wouldn't be the first time) that java is not properly reporting the window hints and/or events to your window manager. Java breaks window managers in new colorful ways with each new revision.
The window could be misplaced, unmapped or in some other funky state that prevents you from seeing and being able to interact with it.
You could try a couple of alternate window managers and see what happens. Just a random idea. But I've seen this happen lots of times in the past. |

I would suggest to launch your Java applications from the command line as far as possible. That way you can see the Exceptions that could be raised from the software, whereas you cannot see that if launched e.g. clicking on a desktop icon. I hope that helps! _________________ Did you know that we typically make use of only 5% of the power of our personal computers?
