PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 8:18 pm    Post subject: Problems compiling Gnome 3.4 Reply with quote

I hope I'm posting in the right forum (I'm new here).

I've got problems compiling Gnome 3.4 from the overlay. I changed my portage config like mentioned in this guide: http://oleeekchoff.blogspot.de/2011/10/gnome-3-on-gentoo.html

Also I've added the x11 overlay and symlinked the package.mask from its profile folder with this command:

Code:
ln -s /var/lib/layman/x11/profile/package.mask /etc/portage/package.mask/x11.mask

When I try to compile gnome with the command emerge -a gnome, the following error about blocked packages appears:

Code:
[blocks B      ] <x11-base/xorg-server-1.11.4 ("<x11-base/xorg-server-1.11.4" is blocking x11-libs/gtk+-3.4.0)

It is a clean new Gentoo install installed using the current minimal-image, current stage3-Archive and current portage snapshot. Also I'm a Gentoo noob, so maybe I am missing something I don't know yet. I already did 3 reinstalls of Gentoo to see if the error can be resolved this way, but it isn't.

My system is a Fujitsu Laptop (Lifebook A Series), the Gentoo kernel 3.2.1 is working great.

Any ideas?

Ugh. I can't talk by experience, but I am fairly sure that you don't have to deviate that much from the standard installation to get gnome 3.4.

I don't think you need the X overlay (which can be a pain at times if you are not so experienced managing portage blocks and driver/ABI issues).

What I'd do is,

  • remove the X overlay, unless you have a specific reason to use it, so, do you?
  • install the gnome overlay, via layman
  • emerge -va '>=gnome-3.4'

That will probably tell you that you need to keyword some package from the gnome overlay. That's fine.

In any case, expect some trouble (after all, gnome 3.4 is not yet in portage for a reason).

ps. I see you are using both overlays and there's some blockage, well, that's to be expected, sometimes. You might have some luck if you keyword and / or unmask the xorg-server package, so it can advance to a newer revision.

Thank you for your quick answer!

I tried using the x11 overlay to get around the blockage this way, but it didn't work either, so I'll try your version and see if it works.

Thank you i92guboj,

keywording and unmasking the xorg-server package works! Now I had another problem, see below:

Code:
!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

  (dev-libs/libxml2-2.7.8-r5::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
(no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in this slot)

I could get around it using the --backtrack=30 option of emerge, but it still warns:

Code:
WARNING: One or more updates have been skipped due to a dependency conflict:

net-libs/libsoup:2.4

(net-libs/libsoup-9999::gnome, ebuild scheduled for merge) conflicts with
~net-libs/libsoup-2.36.1 required by (net-libs/libsoup-gnome-2.36.1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

!!! The following update(s) have been skipped due to unsatisfied dependencies
!!! triggered by backtracking:

gnome-extra/gnome-documents:0
dev-libs/libgdata:0

So, I'll try compiling gnome this way and see if it works.

Hi,

net-libs/libsoup-2.38.0 and net-libs/libsoup-gnome-2.38.0 are juste enough for gnome 3.4. You don't need libsoup-9999

Arrgh, already compiling now! But anyway, thank you for your quick answer! It will take a while until it's ready (currently 60 of 541 packages compiled), but if it works, I'll post the result.

Nobody can help me? I just want Gnome 3.4 to work! If there isn't an option, I'll see if I get Gnome 3.2 working...

Hi,

I think you miss some updates in order to compile gnome-3.4. I'm not sure which one contains to-pixdata (as I don't have my Gentoo here). But a wild guess would be:
glib
gtk:2
gtk:3
gdk-pixbuf

Make sure for those packages that you have the latest non-9999 version available (probably tild-arched).

You may also find where to-pixdata is from with portage-utils package:
Code:
qfile $(which to-pixdata)

I'm now compiling Gnome 3.2 (hoping that it works without errors and problems), because I have to give a presentation tomorrow about Linux. But after that I'll try again to get Gnome 3.4 working. Anyway, thanks for your help!

After a quick look, it seems to-pixdata is a proc in glib.
Note that I actually have Gnome 3.4 with:
dev-libs/glib-2.32.0
x11-libs/gtk+-2.24.10-r1
x11-libs/gtk+-3.4.1
x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.26.1

Don't know if any other version if relevant...
