I am trying to install gnome 3.4 following the guide here at: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Gnome_3

The guide says I need to have gnome already installed. But I am doing a fresh install and having trouble installing it.

I am getting the following error:

Total: 344 packages (1 upgrade, 1 downgrade, 332 new, 10 in new slots), Size of downloads: 502,237 kB

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

sys-fs/udev:0

(sys-fs/udev-171-r9::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
<sys-fs/udev-185 required by (net-wireless/bluez-4.99::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

(sys-fs/udev-195::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
>=sys-fs/udev-187 required by (sys-fs/udev-init-scripts-17-r1::gentoo, installed)
(and 1 more with the same problem)

sys-auth/pambase:0

(sys-auth/pambase-20101024-r2::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
(no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in this slot)

(sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
sys-auth/pambase[consolekit] required by (sys-auth/polkit-0.108::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
sys-auth/pambase[consolekit?,systemd?] required by (gnome-base/gdm-3.4.1-r3::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
#required by app-accessibility/caribou-0.4.5, required by gnome-base/gnome-shell-3.4.2, required by gnome-base/gnome-3.4.1, required by gnome (argument)
=dev-libs/libgee-0.8.2 ~amd64
#required by virtual/dev-manager-0, required by @system, required by @world (argument)
=virtual/udev-180 ~amd64

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
#required by sys-fs/udisks-2.0.0, required by gnome-base/gvfs-1.12.3-r1[udisks], required by app-cdr/brasero-3.4.1, required by media-sound/sound-juicer-3.4.0, required by gnome-base/gnome-extra-apps-3.4.1, required by gnome-base/gnome-3.4.1[extras], required by gnome (argument)
>=virtual/udev-180 gudev hwdb

Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring CONFIG_PROTECT).

Any help would be appreciated!

I reached a bit further by adding to KEYWORDS and USE. But now I am stuck at this:

[blocks B ] <sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r1 ("<sys-apps/shadow-4.1.5-r1" is blocking sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r1)

Total: 342 packages (1 upgrade, 331 new, 10 in new slots), Size of downloads: 501,265 kB
Conflict: 1 block (1 unsatisfied)

* Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
* installed at the same time on the same system.

(sys-apps/shadow-4.1.4.3::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
>=sys-apps/shadow-4.1 required by (virtual/shadow-0::gentoo, installed)

(sys-auth/pambase-20120417-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
sys-auth/pambase[consolekit] required by (gnome-base/gdm-3.4.1-r3::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

>=sys-auth/pambase-20080219.1 required by (sys-apps/shadow-4.1.4.3::gentoo, installed)

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#blocked

How do I remove this block?
