wrapping http through https or tunnelling

If I want to access the web page of a non-secure http device on the other side of an iptables firewall, I know I can port forward a public ip and access it. However, the device does not easily provide https I want to secure it in some way so passwords cannot be sniffed on the open internet. This would connect all forms of iDevices, Gentoo Boxes, Winblows.

1. Is there a way to wrap http into https at the firewall, even if the device does not seem to support that option.

2. I wonder if there a way to create a tunnel via another gentoo box with ssh that will ROUTE through the firewall to devices on the other side? Think of creating a secure ssh connection then routing through it as what I want, a poor man's vpn.

I know how to tunnel and xvnc, but that is to the host, not to anythng behind it. I can read tech docs, but I havent done the more advanced stuff yet.

I probably have to look up ipsec tunnelling from g2 box to g2 box, and is there a way to make the smart phone tunnel to linux.

sounds like a job for stunnel if im reading this correctly (?)

we do this with tracd at work. does the job, since tracd doesnt do https (before anyone else chimes in, we have a specific interest in avoiding e.g. apache+dav) we have stunnel listening on 443, handling the ssl bits, and forwarding to 80
