I have a bad hard drive and wanted to know if is is better to redo my whole system or if i could just copy root and all other system partition like root, boot and swap on my drive over to another drive so i have less down time ?

Or would be just be better to re setup the server and then copy my config files over.

I suspect this is a matter of opinion. If you're replacing the hard drive and everything else is the same, you can go either way. Personally, I'm a fan of redoing the install and copying config files. Sometimes that helps clear out cruft you didn't even know was there. I also don't copy all old config files - just the ones that have LOTS of custom settings.

In the end, your call.

i was guessing that was the best way plus i am going from a 160gig drive to a 500gig drive so it might just be better for the full reinstall.

The size of the drive doesn't matter as long as there's enough room on the new one. Also, if you plan to use a different file system, then of course you'd have to do it over.

Good luck with the rebuild. :)
