Hi,
I can log in to gnome3 as a new user I've created, but not as my main user, which has gnome2/kde/xfce cruft in the hidden files. I have conky writing itself to the screen and starting on startup, as you can see it just before gnome3 crashes and I get the fail whale with sliders. I presume this is a legacy from gnome2, but don't want to randomly.delete hidden files. Anyone got any ideas where I should be looking?

Thanks,
James

Hi BrummieJim!

Login an watch on your ~/.xsession-errors from a tty. There are not only gnome3-errors and still some warnings which may not be important.

Gnome3 don't have a Filemanager that handle your Desktop ~/Desktop by default so you have to use a gnome-tweak-tool and enable it first. Emerge gnome-tweak-tool and run it as user. Section Desktop the Point "Have file manger handle your desktop" toggle this.

First i would try to disable your conky at first. After you see your files again and your gnome-shell starts fine you should risk to start your conky again.

Hope i could push you a bit further to an solution.

Chris

You're not going to like this, but I don't see any alternative to deleting the hidden dot directories. ChrisJumper is right though. You may be able to track down what system is at fault by looking at .xsession-errors. There will probably be gobs of things in there, however, and it may be difficult to decipher the real culprit. My machine runs just fine, but my .xsession-errors has over 100 lines of inconsequential stuff in it.

HI,
Turned off compiz in XFCE, which for some reason stopped it coming on when I tried to log into Gnome. Thank you very much for the help and advice.
