does it read the cd when it starts up? are you sure youve specified the bios boot settings correctly? a gentoo splash screen should come up when it boots the cd...

Gentoo LiveCD works, but Knoppix (the version before the latest) gave a really nasty erros when trying to boot it (and hanged on boot-time after that). That's why my moms computer is now Gentoo and not Knoppix with stuff. I'd like to know what the hell it was all about if I wasn't having so much stuff to do.

error messeges are very important information to solve your problem.
you should first read them carefully and post them here so that advisers and you don't have to waste time.

i think your Knoppix's default kerenel do not have some drivers that gentoo's kernel have. i cannot advise you anymore unless you post error messeges.

Hi!

Did you install grub or lilo?
If not: don't expect gentoo to boot...

Tell us more ...

Daniel

What you see is the computer trying to boot from the cd-rom and, not being able to, defaulting to boot from the hard drive.

It may be that the cd is corrupt. Try burning the Gentoo LiveCD again. Use track-at-once instead of disk-at-once or vice-versa. Sometimes that helps.

you should be using one of the x86 livecd's if you have a pc (which you must have if you're booting into XP). If you have a Pentium 4, use that livecd. Athlon XP, use that one. Etc. What are the specs of your computer?

don't worry about lilo and grub just yet...that's later. Focus on getting this step...booting from the LiveCD. Your bios is set to boot from CD right? (just a double check)

as TheCoop said...is there a nice blue/purpleish screen that comes up ever?
