this is probably not about gentoo but the forum here is
very wise about all things computer

I have an oldish thinkpad x300 with main battery plus
bay battery

Lately, the charging system has been acting strange

The major symptom is that the main battery will not
complete a charge; I get this message

Code:
Battery 1: Charging, 99%, charging at zero rate - will never fully charge.

that means that the bay battery never starts to charge

The secondary symptom is that sometimes one battery (it could be either one)
will stop charging (the other will charge in this case) and there's a message like
this in acpi:

Code:
Battery 0: Unknown, 26%

I have two main batteries and these problems are the same for both

I have fooled around with tp-smapi, but it does not seem to offer a way to force
a battery to charge (it will force a particular battery to *discharge* but that's
not what I need).

I fear this is probaby a fault in the charging system onboard and probably unfixable
but any advice would be very welcome

TIA

I can think of a couple of things:

1. I have a laptop for which the battery needs to be calibrated every now and then simply by letting it run on battery power until the battery is depleted and the machine shuts off due to lack of power. If I don't do this every so often, the battery never reaches 100%. Once I do this, the battery can be fully charged. Try this calibration method to see if it helps.

2. Regardless, batteries have a life span beyond which they no longer work as well. If these are old batteries (several years), replace them. Don't forget to have the old ones recycled instead of trashed.
