Is it possible to run gnome without having to run gnome-panel?
If so, how would one go about removing it? |

Can't you just right click on it and choose remove Panel? As for starting your programs you'd need links or to run a gnome-terminal and then start them. |

You can't remove a panel if it is the only one
I was thinking about using a gdesklet to launch my programs |

If the gnome-session doesn't work, I'd try editing in gconf
/apps/panel/profiles/default/general/panel_id_list

[ I guess I posted too slow ] |
